We are only a few weeks away from the closing of Design Shanghai 2019 at the famous Shanghai Exhibition Centre and we can now finally say that it was indeed a great success. As partner of the event, we are very excited for this result as it confirms how important it has become in the international design scenario and especially for Asia. Surely, it’s set to grow ever more in the future and become another important hub for the whole industry.
Already this year, the attendances set a record-breaking number: 68,865 participants (64,798 visitors + 4,067 exhibitors), with 74% trade visitors and VIPs.
It’s quite clear now that Design Shanghai, Asia’s leading international design event, breaks new ground and sets a precedent in the region’s ever-growing design community.
By showcasing the best design brands and galleries from across the globe, Design Shanghai provided a unique and exciting platform to network, exchange and establish long-term business relationships with Asia’s top architects, interior designers, property developers, retailers, collectors and private buyers. Even the location couldn’t be more symbolic, given the impressive number of skyscrapers currently in construction in the era and the future trends that are emerging in the region for the real estate industry (by 2020 the newly built commercial properties will be 1.54 billion square metres and in the 4 next years 71% of the world’s new skyscrapers will be completed in China).
In this-year edition, Design Shanghai aimed to explore how eastern and western design philosophies could work together synergistically across the five design sections: Contemporary, Classic & Luxury, Kitchen & Bathroom, Workplace and New Materials & Applications.
The New Materials and Applications Design Hall showcased over 30 brands, each taking on the challenge to explore innovative processes and materiality. Among the most interesting exhibitions, we found the Buzao’s experimentation with electroplated stainless steel and Lewu Design Studio foamed silica gel capable of giving new life to old furniture.
“Expression through design is very popular here in China. This year Buzao participates in Design Shanghai for the first time and our hope with our work is to break the routine of fixed definitions for design and express ourselves by experimenting with new materials and processes” Peng Zeng, co- designer Buzao.
Among the international brands attending the event, the show included a number of large scale bespoke installations across the Exhibition Centre by various international designers including Timothy Oulton and Zaha Hadid Architects with their new collections.
Given the great variety of international brands and experimental installations featuring this-year edition, we are quite confident that the future Design Shanghai will be an even larger and benchmark event for the whole design scene worldwide.
As media partner, we are very fond of the way this event has grown in the last years and we are really looking forward to being involved in the next edition as well. For the moment, save the date! 11-14 March 2020 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center.
