What Collaboration & Innovation can Achieve: OptiMist

Meet the latest prototype born in Desall 👉 Bormioli Pharma has just unveiled a new prototype entirely developed by Desall and its community!

At the beginning of February, Bormioli Pharma launched the OptiMist prototype, a smart nebulizer for liquid ophthalmic drugs that revolutionizes the traditional way of administering eye drops.

Ophthalmic medicines are among the most difficult to be administered. At least 50% of patients report difficulties in self-administering topical eye medications, especially when it comes to aiming and squeezing the bottle correctly. Especially for people with disabilities, the elderly or anyone who is unfamiliar with these types of medicine, it is easy to make mistakes, getting drops out of the eye with related drug waste (leading to therapy inefficacy and economic loss for the patient). The device seeks to counter these issues with a new administration method, ergonomic design and the integration of IoT functionalities. The soft applicator that the patient applies around the eye makes this nebulizer really comfortable to use. The drug efficacy is improved through an e-controlled dosage and, thanks to the smart notifications which appear on the nebulizer, therapy management is simplified, especially for the elderly and everyone who suffers from memory impairment difficulties, but also the caregivers who are often tired and overwhelmed by their work.

The OptiMist concept was contributed by Colombian designer Juan Pablo Gomez during one of the many open calls available to creatives and innovators on the Desall platform. During the development phase, our in-house team worked on Juan Pablo’s concept optimizing the original 3D files, engineering the mechanical, electronic, and software components, designing the UI/UX, and developing the App. The result of this collaborative effort is a working prototype of OptiMist, the same one that Bormioli Pharma unveiled this February at Pharmapack Europe 2023 in Paris, one of the most important events in the pharmaceutical industry. Together with Bormioli Pharma and our global community of creatives, we brought to life a cutting-edge device that shows what can be achieved when we all work in synergy to make space for new ideas.

Community Spotlight: Design Researcher Ashwathy Satheesan

Community Spotlight - Design Researcher Ashwathy SatheesanWELCOME TO THE DESALL BLOG. THIS POST IS PART OF THE “COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT” SERIES WHERE WE INTERVIEW THE BEST MEMBERS OF OUR CREATIVE COMMUNITY. THANKS FOR READING!

ASHWATHY SATHEESAN is an award-winning design researcher and a winner of Bormioli Pharma Ophthalmic Dosing Design. In this interview, Ashwathy takes us on a journey through her approach to design, and her passion for solving real-world problems, often in connection to human health and wellbeing. The interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Hi Ashwathy! Thanks for joining us, today. Can you briefly introduce yourself to the readers?

Hi everyone, I’m Ashwathy Satheesan, a Design Researcher and Strategist from Kerala, India. My work has been showcased at various events such as the Global Futures Symposium and Hyderabad Design WeekI’m passionate about projects that deal with design activism and future thinking. I use tools such as systems thinking and critical enquiry to make my designs more inclusive and meaningful. In the future, I hope to explore the potential of design in areas such as healthcare, upcycling and wildlife conservation. Currently, I work for Fractal.ai, uncovering and visualising the hidden factors, processes and data that influence decision-making.

What made you want to pursue a career in design?
Ever since I was a kid, I loved drawing and making things out of scrap. I had no idea that design was a field of study until I was about 15 years old. But I always knew I liked the concept of creating and telling stories with things and I wanted to keep doing that. Studying design at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad broadened my understanding of what design offers. I learned about the fundamental process of solving any problem, whether it’s a product, a system or a service. These experiences gave me insight into what I was passionate about and what skills I needed to develop. It was then that I realised the potential of design and what my tasks as a designer are.

Is there a particular project that you’re particularly proud of? If so, why?
The “Fleo” Parkinson pen project won the prestigious James Dyson Award in 2019. As part of one of my teaching projects, I developed “Fleo”, a stabilising pen to help people with Parkinson‘s tremors write and draw. This pen uses gyroscopic principles to stabilise and reduce the effects of tremors. This was my second research project and I really wanted to work on inclusion and design something for people with special needs. What I really liked about the project was that I was constantly in contact with the users throughout the design process, with lots of user testing. I observed and studied their daily routines and the difficulties they faced when visiting people at the Parkinson’s Society in Ahmedabad. During this time, I developed numerous prototypes and conducted user tests before settling on a proof of concept. The Dyson award gave me the reassurance that I was on the right track. This confirmation meant a lot to me as a young designer just starting out.

Recommend a book or resource that influenced your approach to the craft.
I recently read the book Influence by Robert B. Cialdini and it completely changed the way I think and approach problem-solving. It’s an excellent book to read as a designer because it helps you understand the psychology of persuasion and influencing behaviour.

The designer/architect you most admire.
One of the designers who really inspired me to study product design was Yves Behar because of his approach to sustainability and social innovation. I also admire designers like Joey Zeledon who approach problem-solving in a playful way.

Where can we find you online?

Cluster Wins Best of the Year Award 2022

Cluster Wins Best of the Year Award 2022 | Desall

The Cluster seating system by Luxy and Luigi Vittorio Cittadini has won the Best of the Year Award in the Contract Seating Collection category at Best of the Year Awards 2022!

Cluster was born from a chair design competition launched on the Desall platform for the Italian interior & seating company Luxy. Luigi Vittorio Cittadini, one of the talented designers from the Desall community, submitted the winning proposal, which was then developed into the Cluster seating system.

The Cluster seat is a true game-changer in the world of furniture design. It’s a unique piece that satisfies various functional requirements while being visually appealing. The collection is characterized by geometric shapes that bring stability and composure and consists of a series of back and base elements that allow for endless configurations and colour combinations.

Designer Luigi Vittorio Cittadini has shared with us his thoughts about designing Cluster:

“I almost instinctively entered Desall’s Luxy competition, which was looking for an upholstered chair for indoor use, suitable for both contract and residential use. When I read the brief, I immediately had very specific ideas, which I quickly developed into four different concepts. The news that I had won the Desall competition was completely unexpected because I knew exactly how many proposals had been received.

The winning idea behind the Cluster chair is very simple, but Luxy recognised the great potential and rewarded it. The development phase gave me the opportunity to get to know the entire production chain of an important Made in Italy company like Luxy and to work with professionals of great human value. Seeing the chair I designed exhibited at the Salone del Mobile was a great satisfaction. The many possible variations, a feature that distinguishes this chair, made it possible to create a very strong framework that attracted visitors to the fair.

Finally, Cluster receiving the “Best of the Year Award” from the American magazine “Interior Design Magazine” in the category “Contract Seating Collections” in December 2022 was a very welcome recognition, especially knowing that I was competing against very successful designers.”

This award is a testament to the quality of the Desall community and the power of open innovation and crowdsourcing. It also highlights Luxy’s ability to stay ahead of the game and offer new, cutting-edge products that meet the changing needs of the market.

Once again, congratulations to Luigi Vittorio Cittadini and the entire Luxy team on this amazing achievement! We can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

Community Spotlight: Design Duo Nothelfer

Commmunity Spotlight - Design duo NothelferWELCOME TO THE DESALL BLOG. THIS POST IS PART OF THE “COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT” SERIES WHERE WE INTERVIEW THE BEST MEMBERS OF OUR CREATIVE COMMUNITY. THANKS FOR READING!

NOTHELFER is a design duo bringing together new technologies, design, art and cultural heritage. Based in Germany, Stefanel & Silvia Barutcieff have won several Desall competitions and gained impressive experience working for brands such as BMW, Mini and Samsung. In this interview, they talk about the challenges of managing complex briefs and designing a permanent museum exhibition. The interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Hello you two! It’s great to have you here today. Can you briefly introduce yourselves to the community?

Hi, this is Stefanel, I’m a Senior Designer from Romania, and this is Silvia, a Scientific Researcher and the other half of the Nothelfer duo. We currently live in Munich, Germany, and our expertise lies in product design, installations for museums and fairs, and user interfaces. Most of our projects use technology to create new types of user experiences with distinct emotional and interactive components.

Nothelfer has won several Desall contests so far. Which competition was the most exciting for you?
We’ve had a lot of fun working on all the Desall competitions so far. The “Lavazza Smart Coffee Corner” contest was particularly exciting as our proposal was developed into an actual prototype that was presented at Venditalia 2022, one of the biggest trade shows in the industry. When working on the original project for the new Lavazza coffee break area, the original intention was to create a modular design that could be adapted to different sizes and locations, bringing together all the different components in a unified look with a clear message (Green Hub, see the gallery at the end of the interview).

In the Lavazza challenges, you successfully delivered concepts for different product collections while maintaining a consistent “family feel”. What is your advice for working on such complex briefs?
Designing for a family of objects and managing complexity are some of the most difficult tasks for us, as a good design has to meet all the requirements of the brief and parties involved. We strongly believe in user-centred design to find the best solution for the end customer, but at the same time, the solution has to meet the client’s expectations, integrate well with their portfolio, take into account their brand values, target production costs, distribution channels, etc. Therefore, we usually start by generating multiple solutions. This is done intentionally to avoid settling for a solution that seems to be a good idea at first glance but ultimately cannot meet all the client’s requirements. Instead, we methodically go through the list of requirements and see what can be adjusted in each solution. Sometimes working on certain aspects of a particular solution can lead to major changes being made to other parts of the same design, which in turn need to be readdressed. It’s a lot of work, but if some of the concepts don’t seem to fit in the end, we just drop them and start looking for better ideas. That’s actually the most interesting part for us: finding the most promising design that solves all the challenges of the brief in a harmonious and elegant way.

In addition to industrial design, you are also active in the field of culture and museum installations. Is there a particular project you are proud of?

That would be the permanent exhibition of Museikon in Alba Iulia (Romania), a museum dedicated to Transylvanian icons and ancient religious books. The challenge was to find a balance between effectively explaining icons (their origin, role, artistic aspects, etc.) to a wide range of visitors – especially the tech-savvy younger generation – and avoiding cultural slights that could be taken as offensive. After qualitative interviews with young museum visitors, curators and icon specialists, we developed a design concept that invites users not only to passively view the exhibits but also to interact with the content, while preserving the original sacred aspect of the icons. One of the installations, located at the entrance of the museum, for example, is inspired by a widely used iconographic theme, the “Virgin of Mercy”. By reflecting themselves in the image under the arms of the stylised silhouette of the Virgin Mary, just like the painted people in the original representations, visitors “enter the world of icons” and are under divine protection. The installation also serves as a communication opportunity, offering the possibility for selfies and sharing on social media.

Recommend a book or resource on design/creativity that you would not want to live without.
We mainly use digital resources for inspiration these days, e.g. Pinterest, design blogs like Designboom, UX, forums like UX Collective and also more art-oriented ones like Mymodernmet. Last but not least, we are passionate museum visitors and therefore have a large private archive of images from our visits – a very inspiring resource.

The designer/architect you admire the most.
There are many, but we do not have an absolute favourite. In product design, we admire the approach of Nendo, Enzo Mari, and Konstantin Grčić.

Where can we find you online?
