Winner announcement for Design By Your Side, the product design competition launched in collaboration with Missaglia on Desall.com.

Participants were invited to create a new series of cabinets specifically designed for medical environments, such as hospitals, clinics and nursery homes, with a view to improving the overall usability by the final user (be it a patient or a caregiver) and capable of fitting the various settings where these would be destined.
Another important aspect of the challenge was functions. Here’s where you truly got creative and showed some new interesting applications, such as app-enabled scenarios and innovative features, across three main requisites:

1. Containing/archiving documents and medical reports with sensible data: this function will find application in the areas reserved to personnel. It is fundamental that access control to the content and its confidentiality are ensured. The proposals aimed at improving the archiving and organising of the contents will be appreciated, even by means of digital and technological solutions;

2. Containing clothes and personal belongings of the patients: this function will be mainly used inside the patients’ rooms, granting an easy access to one’s own personal belongings and at the same time providing for the safety of the content. Your projects shall include the employment of a safe or similar to grant the highest degree of safety for the objects there contained. Also in this case, digital and technological solutions will be appreciated, for example by using accessories and/or systems able to recharge the electronic devices of the patients when stored inside;

3. Containing medicines: this function will be used in the areas reserved to the medical and auxiliary personnel and shall allow for a practical storing and access to medicines. The solutions able to improve the medicines management, suggesting digital and technological solutions such as the monitoring of the availability and expiration date of the medicines will be appreciated. Keep into consideration that some medicines and drugs might require a temperature-controlled storage.

In addition to this, the possibility to create compositions with the cabinets to be customised and assembled according to the available space and to the functions required was considered another interesting aspect for the whole project.

Your response was truly impressive and Missaglia decided to assign two extra awards, in addition to the winner of the contest! So without further ado please welcome the winners!

Description:
We think of a new experience in the use of cars and cabinets for the storage, transport and use of medicines. We innovate in the user experience by incorporating the warning technology to a mobile phone of expiration dates and locations of each medication located in the cabinets. We use solid surface materials 100% recyclable, with 10 years warranty and totally aseptic. We generate a change in the paradigm of cabinets for medicines.

For many years we have worked in furniture for medicine and we have realized that there is no innovation in the use of these new furniture. Nor is there a search in the aesthetic or in the application of new materials. We understand that, at present, it is important to be able to create a modular system of cabinets and cars that not only generate a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing space for the current years, but also allow us to focus on curing a patient without thinking about other aspects. as for example where I find a medicine, if it is at the right temperature, when it is about to expire, among other issues. Generating intelligent furniture does not mean putting more screens, but it must allow us to anticipate the problems caused by the lack of organization that can be in a health facility. Finally, we believe in solid surfaces, we use them daily and it comforts us to think that a product can last more than 10 years in its constant use, taking care not only to patients and establishments, but also to the planet.

Description:
The ECO family of cabinets for Missaglia, features a sculptural front face and a light weight construction.

All of the cabinets shapes are kept smooth to make cleaning and sanitation as easy as possible. Any unnecessary steps in the form are avoided.
The large integrated handle clearly communicates its function, creates character and allows for the integration of various elements of access control, like fingerprint scanners, ID tags, or locks. The handle is nano coated for self sterilization.

The characteristically thick door of the cabinets is made from a thin vacuum formed skin, that is supported by a light weight internal structure. This structure can be hidden, or optionally visible as a customized 3d printed element using recycled plastic material. When using the transparent or translucent front; lighting for mood or as a night light can be integrated into the doors as well.
The visual thickness of the door also allows for the integration of electronic devices, like touch screens, that display the status of the stored medicine or indicate to the user where to find a specific type.

The body of the cabinet is made from honeycomb boards to reduce both weight and material consumption.

Vivid colours and white are the dominant colours of the ECO family, giving it a young, fresh and friendly appearance.
